We are extremely pleased to announce that we are now a certified B Corporation – the third only in Vietnam (so far!). We are joining the esteemed ranks of companies like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry's and Etsy, plus 4,476 other companies in 77 countries that have signed up to use Business as a Force for Good and are leading the way in sustainability, governance and stakeholder inclusivity.
Since Day 1 of Lecka we have worked on becoming a B Corporation. It officially certifies what we do and live by every day: building a company that takes all stakeholders into account. From the farmers, our staff, to customers and sellers, we consider everyone in our decision making process and apply a holistic view to solving problems.
Each company that goes through the certification assessment got to answer a very long list of questions and provide proof and validation for many of those. The assessment is split into various impact sections: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers. This framework is incredibly useful for anyone who is seeking a comprehensive approach to running a sustainable business. Less talk, more doing.
As we have looked at the B Corp approach from Day 1, we were able to implement many of the requirements right away, rather than adjusting to them later! After the assessment, the company receives a score that needs to be at least 80 in order to qualify for a B Corporation (the maximum is 180). Our score is 92.9, which places us just above the average of similar companies in similar industries.
We made it! However, we are far away from 180!
Instead of boasting here how great we are and why we deserve to be a B Corp, we want to point out the areas where we can do better:
1) Working with Local Farmers
We have onboarded a range of local suppliers who either directly are farmers or process the goods from local farmers. All of those suppliers practice sustainable farming methods. However, we need to work more closely with many of those in order to educate on less wasteful packaging, reporting standards, organic methods and upgrading machines to achieve better efficiencies. Only a few farmers have a Fair Trade or Organic certificate yet that would allow them to export much more. We are hoping to drive revenue to those farmers who can then afford those upgrades.
2) Greener Facility
We need to do a better job of managing our waste in our factory. The local authorities here don't separate waste (eg paper, plastic, organic) and everything gets thrown together. Also, we would like to recycle our waste water and install solar panels on our roof top to generate energy for our machines.
3) Data Recording
Our big goal for 2022 is to understand our carbon footprint. We need to dig up a lot of data, everything from our supply chain to our sales, and evaluate the impact each has on the environment. A lot of data is unavailable in Vietnam and it will be a challenge to get a comprehensive picture. However, we will start somewhere and move forward from there. Without data there is no improvement.
4) Impact Reporting
Lastly, we haven't done a good job yet in presenting all our impact to the world. As we have been so execution driven, we didn't summarize our actions into a report and infographics to make them easy to understand by anyone. We need to communicate those better so we receive feedback and participate more in the global sustainability conversation.
We hope to inspire other businesses in Vietnam to take a similar route and become a B Corporation. It is such a fantastic framework that provides a clear roadmap how to run a business and do good at the same time.
